Midwife training for the

Sono-breech study

Many of the midwives performing scans for Sono-breech have received training especially for the study. The training varies from site to site, but to date 162 midwives from nine participating hospitals have attended an ultrasound simulation training session at Imperial College London.

This training session is run by Professor Lees and some of the research fellows and includes both an ultrasound theory presentation and a practical session with the ultrasound simulator. Midwives then practice their skills on patients before being signed off as competent to participate in the study.

Simulation training

There have been 22 simulation training sessions held for midwives

The sessions involve using an ultrasound simulator called OPUS to teach basic ultrasound skills

Midwives practice with a combination of geometric shapes and real scans

Training pathway

Midwives follow a training pathway when learning to scan.
