  • Professor Christoph Lees

    Co-Chief Investigator, Imperial College London

    Christoph is Professor of Obstetrics as Imperial College London;  Honorary Consultant in Obstetrics and Head of Specialty for Fetal Medicine at the Centre for Fetal Care, Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; Clinical Director for Fetal Medicine for North West London and Visiting Professor KU Leuven (Belgium).  Christoph qualified from Guy's Hospital, London in 1990. Following subspecialty accreditation in fetal-maternal medicine at King's College Hospital, London he established the fetal medicine unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge in 2001 and inaugurated the RCOG MFM subspecialty programme in 2006.

    His research interest is on fetal assessment and in particular the use of Doppler ultrasound to assess the health of the baby, scanning in labour, and non-invasive fetal surgery. He is the Chief Investigator of The Trial of Umbilical and Fetal Flow in Europe (TRUFFLE), a Collaboration of 51 Centres across Europe; co-founder of the International Working Group of Maternal Haemodynamics and Intrapartum ultrasound ISLANDs group. He is a Board member of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG) 2015-2023, is chairman of the ISUOG Doppler and vascular imaging group and member then chair of the ISUOG Safety Committee (2018-2022).

    He has published widely in scientific journals and has authored textbooks on fetal growth restriction, maternal haemodynamics and the widely read Dewhurst’s Textbook of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. 

  • Professor Amarnath Bhide

    Co-Chief Investigator, St George’s

    Amarnath Bhide is currently Professor and Consultant in Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics at St. George’s Hospital in London, United Kingdom. He is Professor of Practice in Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics at City-St. George’s, University of London.

    He is the Editor in Chief of Acta Obstetricia Gynecologica Scandinavica (AOGS) and editorial board member of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

    His research interests are in placental physiology and pathology, hypoxaemia and fetal cardiac function. His clinical interests are in invasive prenatal diagnosis and therapy, multiple pregnancy, antenatal fetal monitoring and problems with fetal growth.

  • Dr Jessica Thomas

    Clinical Research Fellow, Imperial College London

    Jessica Thomas is a Clinical Research Fellow for the Sono-breech study based at Imperial College London. She is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar in North West London with special interests in high risk pregnancy, ultrasound and placental pathology.

    Prior to graduating from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2018 (MBBS), she completed a BSc(Hons) in Physiology and was awarded sponsorship from the Medical Research Council to complete an MRes in Translational Medicine, both at the University of Manchester.

  • Danielle Thornton

    Lead Research Midwife, Women’s Health Research Centre, Imperial College London

    Hi I'm Danielle, I am the Lead Research Midwife for the Women’s Health Research Centre at Imperial.  I have oversight across the portfolio of women’s health research projects that are supported by the WHRC, ranging from pre-conception to menopause and I manage the WHRC team.  

    I am a co-applicant for the Sono-Breech study helping provide midwifery guidance and support. I am excited to be working on such an important study that could enhance midwifery skills and change practice.

  • Andrea Smith

    Research Midwife, Imperial College London

    I'm the Research Midwife for the Sono-breech study at Imperial - which covers Queen Charlotte’s and St Mary’s in NW London. I have been a research midwife for over 4 years and am so happy to be involved in the Sono-breech Study - it’s so important to be involved in a clinical research study which is also supporting midwives to develop their involvement in research whilst adding to their clinical skills.

  • Dr Mandie Scamell

    Study co-applicant, City St George’s

    Mandie Scamell is a medical anthropologist and registered midwife with 30 years of clinical, educational and research experience in maternity care.  Following 11 years of clinical practice, Mandie combined her anthropological and clinical expertise through her PhD thesis on midwifery understandings of risk and the impact these have on intrapartum care quality.

    Since then, Mandie has been involved in education and research pursuing her interests in the culture of maternity care practice, risk, pregnancy length, intrapartum care, bio-ethics, maternal health inequalities, medical anthropology, participatory and inclusive research methods, critical theory and interactive pedagogy.  

    Mandie is co-editor of Risk, Pregnancy and Childbirth (Routledge), has written a range of book chapters exploring how risk operates in maternity clinical practice, research articles and edited Special Issue for Health Risk and Society.

  • Dr Cassandra Yuill

    Research Fellow, City St George’s

    Dr Cassandra Yuill is a medical anthropologist who researches maternal health and maternity services in the UK. She is working as a Research Fellow on Sono-breech’s qualitative acceptability study exploring women and midwives’ experiences and perspectives of hand-held ultrasound scans.

  • Dr Julia Townson

    Study co-applicant, Cardiff CTR

    Julia Townson is a co-applicant for Sono-breech, and provides senior responsibility for the delivery of the study within the Centre for Trials Research, Cardiff University. She is a Principal Research Fellow and as a clinical trials methodologist, works across a range of clinical areas, to improve health and well-being, and to reduce health inequalities.

  • Mark Goddard

    Data manager, Cardiff CTR

    I am based in the Centre for Trials Research at Cardiff University. I am working on the Sono-Breech study as a Data Manger.

  • Dr Eleri Owen-Jones

    Trial manager, Cardiff CTR

    I am a trial manager/research associate at the Centre for Trials Research (CTR), College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, Cardiff University. I have clinical trial experience in a wide range of disciplines especially in studies involving Women's Health, and Children and Young People, within the Population Health division in the CTR.

    I am currently managing the Sono-breech study which is evaluating the use of hand-held ultrasound devices to detect breech pregnancies. I have extensive knowledge and experience in trial methodology and research governance.

  • Professor Rachael Hunter

    Study co-applicant, University College London

    Rachael Maree Hunter is a Professor of Health Economics at University College London (UCL). She co-directs the Health Economics Policy Lab (HEPL) and is the head of the Health Economics Analysis and Research Methods Team (HEART). Her work focuses on health economics, women’s health and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.

  • Penelope Farthing

    Research Support Coordinator, Cardiff CTR

    I am a Research Support Coordinator based at the CTR Office in Cardiff.  I provide the administrative support for the Study. I work with the Clinical Trials Unit as I wanted to work in research into making people's lives better following the loss of several relatives to cancer. I have a biochemistry degree and diplomas in Biological Sciences and Chemistry.
